The Spanish American War taught America that the aging M1885 belts and equipment was obsolete. What came next was the start of the U.S. combat system that would be both backwards and forwards compatible through today. The first changes were in 1903, to coincide with the adoption of the 1903 Springfield. By 1910 these changes had led to the complete web system of carrying gear and weapons, collectively called the M1910 system, still compatible with modern systems throughout the world.
This belt is the M1917 Mounted Cartridge Belt by Russell, made to hold .30-06 ammunition on stripper clips. The maker's mark can be found on the inside of a pocket. Unfortunately it is too faint to photograph. The date stamp is even worse, but our best guess is 1918. One pouch seems to have been replaced with a M1927 pouch, presumably by the US Government, based on stitching and materials. The flap to that pouch, however, is original to the rest of the belt.
Condition is incredible considering its age. One pouch seems to have some faded writing on it.
The belt is still usable, and the whole ensemble would be great for a costume, collector or reenactor.
These items arrive as surplus and may feature wear, dust and minor imperfections. As-Is. No returns or refunds. Call 205-533-8595 with questions.
