The Chauchat was THE light machine gun for the allies in World War I - being used by the U.S., France, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Italy, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Serbia.
The "Sho-Sho" first entered U.S. service with the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). The AEF was sent 18,000 newly manufactured M1916 Sho-Shos, in .30-06 caliber. Unfortunately, there were major design flaws with these rifles, and many were discarded ("lost") by the troops given them. There are reports of entire auto-rifle units carrying only bolt actions into battle.
When the U.S. officially entered WWI, the AEF, devoid of usable automatic rifles, purchased quantities of the 8mm Lebel version. The U.S. got magazines and pouches from their French allies as well, and even produced French-pattern magazine pouches for GIs. Those pouches far outnumber the U.S. designed ones.
Between the Summer of 1917 and the November 11, 1918 Armistice, the Gladiator factory delivered 16,000 Chauchats in 8 mm Lebel and 19,000 in .30-06. Manufactured to hold either the 8mm Lebel, or 30-06 crescent moon shaped magazines of the Modèle 1915 Chauchat, it is unknown how many of these bags were made, but it is known that very few of them exist - so few that excellent examples can fetch up to $600.
This bag is in overall great shape, with no signs of rot. The straps show wear where they make contact with the buckles, and there is wear fitting of a used, surplus, 100-plus year old item.
would be great for a serious collector, Chauchat owner, or WW1 afficianado.
These items arrive as surplus and may feature wear, dust and minor imperfections. As-Is. No returns or refunds. Call 205-533-8595 with questions.
