In 1861, Eagle Manufacturing Company of Norwich, CT received a contract to produce 25,000 US Model 1861 rifle muskets for $20 each. They were supposed to make 500 rifles for the first three months, 1,000 per month the next two months, 1,500 a month in October and November of that year, and 2,000 a month until the end of the contract. In reality, they had yet to make any rifles by Spring. Eagle determined that unless they produced 50,000 rifles, they would never be able to pay for their tooling. Their attempt at renegotiation backfired, and the government contract was actually reduced to 20,000.

 T
he overall condition is good. Strong action, with a good nipple. The bore is in good shape for its age.  Rifle was produced by the Norwich Arms Company of Norwich, Connecticut. This is an eary production model dated 1864.
Barrel has a mottled surface with light pitting, the original sights are present. Black walnut stock is in very nice condition with dings and scratches consistent with age. There are two small cracks on the obverse side near the screw (pictured). This rifle has been recently fired by its previous owner.

The legendary P1871 Martini Henry Short Lever Rifle was great, until it wasn't. The combination of the quality of casings in the mid-late 19th century, black powder residue, and the 1871's short lever often led to jams in the middle of combat. See More
