At the turn of the century, the U.S. Army was still largely issued equipment nearing 20 years old. 1903, however, was the year the U.S. finally modernized. That year saw the introduction of the 1903 Springfield rifle, as well as the introduction of new cartridge belts, load bearing equipment, mess equipment and more.
In the case of cups, the army was looking for a replacement for the 1874 pattern cup which had to be tied to the outside of a pack due to its size. Several experimental options were issued to troops.
Not all of these experimental items were adopted, however. This is especially true of the granitware cup available here. While it was issued in some numbers, reports began circulating that certain acidic foods, such as tomatoes, and certain acidic drinks, such as coffee, triggered a chemical reaction in the coating, turning the contents to poison. By 1908 the Army settled on a simple tin cup to replace the various experimental versions, but it is unknown when they stopped issuing the granitware.
By 1910 the entire concept of a cup was obsolete as the Army adopted the M1910 canteen and cup which served for the next half century/
These cups are extremely rare and sought after by collectors. They should not be used for obvious reasons.
Measures 2.75" high and 4.5" in diameter.
