The Mannlicher–Schönauer is arguably one of the nicest, and most beautiful, military rifles of all time. Originally designed in 1900, the incredibly smooth bolt was based off of the Gewehr 88, and the gun featured a very modern rotary magazine. It was made to very high tolerances, and with very high quality materials, with a very modern 6.5 caliber cartridge. It was also one of the most expensive military rifles of its time, and adjusted for inflation, possibly all time. Because of this, they could not find militaries interested in it.
Greece, however, found themselves facing increasing clashes with Macedonia, and a very real need to adopt a modern repeating rifle since theirs was outclassed by virtually any potential or current enemy. In 1903 Greece signed a contract for Mannlicher–Schönauers, designated the model of 1903. They didn't actually receive any until 1906 - two years into a full-on war with Macedonia. The Macedonian war would bleed into the First Balkan War, the Second Balkan War, World War I and the Greco-Turkish War.
The rifle would serve through two decades worth of continual war, have a brief respite, and then serve for nearly a decade of war beginning with World War II.
There is very little information on this particular style Mannlicher bayonet, and what there is sometimes conflicts. Some sources say that these bayonets were made incredibly early on out of surplus Gras bayonets. Some sources just describe its similarity to Gras blades. Either way, these bayonets are among the rarest for this rifle, even considering "common" bayonets for this rifle are rare. This particular bayonet was made by Eredi Gnutti of Brescia, Italy, and is so marked on the ricasso.
Gondition is very good (see pictures). No scabbard.
This bayonet is WWI surplus, and may feature minor wear, light rust, dust and minor imperfections, none of which take away from it's beauty. As-Is. No returns or refunds. Call 205-533-8595 with questions.
