The Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops (PASGT) system began development in 1980. The program was designed to give troops body armor as well as ballistic Kevlar helmets to repace the old steel pot helmets. The helmets began to be implemented in 1983, and completely replaced previous helmets in 1985.
The helmets were made from 12 layers of Kevlar. The US Helmet Ground Troops Parachute Helmet was developed during this time for paratroopers and the like, and was in use until 2003 when it was replaced with the Lightweight Helmet.
For sale is a Gentex Parachute helmet in great, used condition. It is missing the snap-on chinstrap.
