ALL ANTIQUE RIFLES SOLD AS-IS. NEVER ATTEMPT TO FIRE AN ANTIQUE WEAPON WITHOUT CONSULTING A GUNSMITH. SEE PICTURES FOR CONDITION AND DETAILS. These are sold as collectible antiques.
While designed by Norwegian military officer Ole Hermann Johannes Krag and a civilian by the name of Erik Jorgensen, Denmark was the first country to adopt it, in 1889, and the last country to use it, sometime after World War II.
Krag and Jorgensen originally set out to improve the 1884 Jarmann rifle which utilized a tubular magazine. They eventually settled on the iconic "capsule" magazine. This design could be easily topped up, but more importantly it could be fitted to any existing bolt-action rifle - whether tubular fed, or single shot. Not only that, it could also utilize more modern bullet designs.
This design was added to an improved version of an earlier Krag design and submitted to Denmark for trials. The Danes showed interest, but requested several changes, including lightening the rifle and improving the bolt. They also did not need such a high capacity 10-round magazine. The rifle was simplified, and the magazine was shrunk into a "half capsule" five round magazine. The bolt design was borrowed from what were the best bolts of the time and combined the long extractor of the Jarmann, and several features borrowed from various Mauser designs. It is possible the lug design was inspired by the designs of James Paris Lee.
This design was also almost exactly what America would adopt as the "30-40 Krag" with the most obvious difference being the deletion of the barrel shroud.
This example features a nice bore, all-matching numbers, an original strap, and the original stock disc. Condition is very good with some petina. See pictures for more.
