ALL ANTIQUE RIFLES SOLD AS-IS. NEVER ATTEMPT TO FIRE AN ANTIQUE WEAPON WITHOUT CONSULTING A GUNSMITH. SEE PICTURES FOR CONDITION AND DETAILS
The Vetterli design was one of the first successful bolt-action military rifles to see wide use. The design was further improved in 1887 when the simple, single-shot, rifles were converted to repeaters with the addition of the Vitali five-shot magazine.
This rifle was converted to 6.5mm Carcano - the same round as the M1891 Carcano - for use by rear echelon troops, but since the rifles were built for black powder, regular 6.5 Carcano ammo was deemed dangerous. As such, these were fired with a light loading of that round, known as 6.5 Vetterli.
The rifles were converted by the "Salerno Method", the barrels were sleeved, the bolt face was changed, and the firing pin was modified.
These rifles were again pulled out of mothballs for the Second Italo-Ethiopian War. Many went to Spain where they fought with Fascists in the Spanish Civil War, and later, the Fascist Blackshirts in World War II.
This rifle is in good condition, and comes with a Carcano clip, but should never be fired with modern ammo. The wood has some dents and dings, and the metal has some surface rust. The bore is dark, but the rifing is strong. All numbers match, including stock.

The legendary P1871 Martini Henry Short Lever Rifle was great, until it wasn't. The combination of the quality of casings in the mid-late 19th century, black powder residue, and the 1871's short lever often led to jams in the middle of combat. See More
