The birth of Ironclads was perhaps the greatest naval warfare invention since the cannon. On March 9, 1862, when these two titans battled to a standstill, the world took notice, and the world's navies became obsolete.

The CSS Virginia began life as the steam-powered frigate, Merrimack, one of the Union Navy's finest six-screw frigates. On April 20, 1861 the Confederate Navy took control of Norfolk Naval Yard and the ships docked there. Those ships were immediately pressed into Confederate service, but the Merrimack would go on to be something special. Over the course of 10 months armor and armaments were added to the ship. The armament was sloped like a modern tank to deflect enemy fire.

The USS Monitor was created by engineer John Ericsson. Ericsson was the genious behind the first American screw-powered frigate, several steam locomotives, and many steam engine innovations. Unlike the Virginia, which was built from an existing hull, the Monitor was built from scratch. The low hull was based on Swedish looging barges for a low profile, and an innovative turret carrying two cannons was mounted to the top. Whereas the Virginia was designed to deflect cannonbals the monitor was designed to be hard to hit.

These die-cast models are incredibly detailed.

The Monitor is approx. 4 1/4 inch long, 1 3/8 inch wide and one inch tall from the top of the flag pole.

The Merrimack/Virginia is approx. 6 inches long, 1/12 inches wide and 1 1/4 inches tall at the flagpole
