The introduction of the percussion cap in the 1820s revolutionized firearms design, as well as warefare in general. Not only could firearms work somewhat reliably in any weather, but the idea of repeating firearms could now be an everyday reality for the masses.

The culmination of these leaps in technology was illustrated by what many call "the first modern war" - the American Civil War.

This is a Civil War era regulation cap box in very good condition, and the leather is still supple. There is no obvious maker mark. It is stamped with a U.S. Ordnance Department sub inspector mark, but the name of the inspector was not stamped hard enough and the only legible letter appears to be an 'F" or perhaps half of an "R". Below the inspector stamp are the letters "R" and "NE". The sheep skin liner flap is mostly in tact. See pictures for more.

Measures approx. 3 5/8 wide,  3 3/8 tall, and 1 3/8 thick..
