This is a Chilmark Pewter, "Winfield Scott Hancock" limited run pewter statue by Francis Barnum. Produced in 1993, this special edition statue (#363 out of 1200) is highly detailed. Chillmark closed their Hudson Creek Pewter studio in 2000, which was considered one of the finest such studios in the world, producing Western, Civil War, and fantasy statuettes.

Hancock is known as a hero, or as a devil, depending on perspective. On the one hand, he was considered one of the most brilliant commanders in the Union, earning the monicker "Hancock the Superb." He served at the Battles of Williamsburg, Antietam and Chancellorsville. He later became commander of the Army of the Potomac’s II Corps. At Gettysburg, he repulsed Pickett’s Charge.

On the other hand, he participated in war, genocide and supression of native peoples, made "Bleeding Kansas" even bloodier, fought and supressed Mormons in Utah, all before serving in the Civil War. Afterwards, he was involved in the corrupt and heavy-handed supression occupation of the South during Reconstruction. Then, to top it off, he participated in yet another "ethnic cleansing" of the native population until stopped by the Medicine Lodge Treaty in 1885.

"Winfield Scott Hancock" depicts the man holding binoculars and surveying the battlefield. The figure stands approx. 5.5-inches tall, including base, with a base that is approx. 4" by 4".
