The Trap door Springfield rifle was Americas first breech-loading main battle rifle. Beginning in 1864, the U.S. government found themselves with a massive amount of muzzle-loading rifles, an a world moving into the cartridge era. The first iteration was merely a conversion of the older rifles by cutting the barrel, and adding the breech-loading system.
Meanwhile, Springfield was working on a version for the civilian market. This became the Model 99, which would be adopted by the U.S. military as the 1873 model. This rifle, along with at least 16 variants of it, would go on to serve for the next 20 years, and would be found in the hands of hunters well into the 20th Century.

This example was made around December 1874. The action is tight, the bore is good with some oxidation, and the wood is in good condition with no major flaws. The extracter, however, does not reliably eject modern test rounds. It does however, reliably eject period casings, which have a slightly larger rim, so this may be a design issue relating to modern cartridges rather than a flaw with the extractor.
