First, why is it called a sad iron? Sad, though now an emotion, also means "solid", as these are solid iron. Now more commonly called a flat iron, they were once heated on hearths or atop stoves. The act of ironing clothes was invented in 4th Century China, and began to be popular in Europe in the 17th Century. The flat iron design as we know it likely developed in the late 17th or early 18th century, mostly for the elites and nobles. The act of ironing clothes likely became popular for the masses in America thanks to Chinese immigrants arriving in California in the 1850s and 1860s. In addition to mining and railroad work, they also brought the concept of the "modern" laundromat. For a very low price, clothes could be cleaned AND pressed. The pressed look had come into fashion.
Condition is nice with silver paint and some rust, mostly on the bottom, both indicating that this was used as a doorstop in the 1960s and 70s at the height of the "lets spray paint this historical artifact bronze or silver, and mop around it for the next 20 years" phase. There is 1920 date barely visible on the left side, above a maker mark that is illegible.
Weight is approx 9. Dimensions are approx 7"x3.5"x4.5"
Perfect for home use, display, historical reenactment, homesteaders, collectors and more.
This item came from a private collection, is very old, and may feature minor wear, dust and minor imperfections, none of which take away from it's beauty. As-Is. No returns or refunds. Call 205-533-8595 with questions. No guarantee to manufacturer, but all indicators and guides point to Arcade.
