While cartridges, had been around a while before the Civil War, and the .41 caliber Moore Derringer - designed in 1861 - even saw some military carry, popularity of this combination surged immediately after the war.
After Moore developed the concept, but before Remington changed the market, Merrimack arms stepped into the fray.
The "Southerner" was designed for the recently re-opened "previously Confederate" market. It was a well built, compact, and surprisingly ergonomic turn-barrel pistol. Only 6,500 were made by Merrimack before production was taken over by Brown Manufacturing Co.
This example was well-used and well-carried. Most of the side barrel markings are unreadable. All we could read was "CK ARMS" and "-ASS" although parts of other letters are intact. The gun would have originally been marked "MERRIMACK ARMS & MANUFACTURING CO/NEWBURYPORT/MASS/PATENTED APRIL 9, 1867." The SOUTHERNER marking on the top of the barrel is still mostly crisp. The frame is brass and has been stamped on both sides with the initials "JM". Bore has some pitting, but rifling is still visible. We suspect there is some gunk on the sear as well, as the hammer only locks back sometimes.
While condition is only "Antique Good", most of these show considerable wear, indicating a lot of carry. However, this may be the lowest serialed example found in decades with an SN of 100.

The legendary P1871 Martini Henry Short Lever Rifle was great, until it wasn't. The combination of the quality of casings in the mid-late 19th century, black powder residue, and the 1871's short lever often led to jams in the middle of combat. See More
