The Colt 1860 grew out of, and improved upon, the 1851 Navy model. The two models shared a frame, but the 1860 had a wedge ground out of the recoil shield to reduce binding due to loose caps. A section was also cut from the frame to fit the larger caliber cylinder. The grip was larger and the barrel and loading lever were improved.
More than 200,000 were made from 1860 to 1873, with more than half going to the U.S. government. While the 1851 design might have been more represented in the Civil War, with Confederate copies as well as numerous European made "Brevete" models, the 1860 was by far the most issued COLT.

This example is martially marked with a John Taylor Springfield inspector mark and a Major Charles S. Cowell acceptance mark. New York adress. Condition is very nice, with all matching numbers and an original shoulder stock notch - a rare find. There is some wear consistent with use, but the gun has been well-kept to the point that even the nipples appear usable.
