At one point Argentina was one of the most well-equipped modern militaries in the Western Hemisphere. In 1891 Argentina adopted a new Mauser rifle, and other Prussian military systems. They were, in short, a threat to neighboring Chile. Chile, with its vast coastline was a likely target of Argentina, so in 1895 they too decided to update their military. The 1895 Mauser was arguably the finest rifle of its day.
The Mauser Model 1895 also saw service in Mexico, Costa Rica, Paraguay, South Africa, Iran, Honduras and El Salvadore. Chile still parades and drills with these rifles.
These rifles are known for their buttery-smooth cock-on-closing bolts. The fantastic 7x57 cartridge which could be reloaded quickly using stripper clips.
It could also be argued that Ludwig Loewe, of Berlin, manufactured the finest of these rifles.
These rifles were made under license by Loewe, DWM, and Zastava of Serbia.
This rifle rifle has the Chilean catruche mostly in-tact over the chamber, with the maker marking and model on the left side:
MAUSER CHILENO MODELO 1895, MANUFACTURA LOEWE BERLIN
This rifle appears to be all-matching. The action is great, and the bore is frosty but has sharp, deep rifling, and no obvious pits or blemishes. The stock and exterior metal shows wear consistent with use. The rifle is a highly sought after D series with a stock cartuche date of 1895. It is said these were the best of the first year rifles.
The bayonet dates from 1898 to 1899 and is a H series from the famed Weyersber Kirschbaum, the largest factory in Solingen, the "City of Blades". Solingen has been a center of blademaking in Europe for 2000 years, and these blades are still highly regarded. Blade condition is excellent, though the sheath and handle show their age and wear.
