At one point in time, Mauser rifles were arguably the most issued rifles worldwide. They were used in Germany and Spain, throughout Central and South America, Asia and more. Even America copied their designs.

It could be argued that the 1893 series of rifles was the pinnacle of the design. It was stronger than the designs that came before, and slicker and with a faster action than the designs that came later. The M1893 was the first to have a flush, staggered-column box magazine.  The fantastic 7x57 cartridge which could be reloaded quickly using stripper clips. And the cock-on-close bolt was the fastest action Mauser ever utilized. Time and time again, such as in the Spanish-American war, the 1893 proved it was superior to the guns it faced.

It could also be argued that Ludwig Loewe, of Berlin, manufactured the finest of these rifles.

Brazil saw the success of the 1893 "Spanish Mauser" - as it became known worldwide - and ordered their own. After recieving shipments of the 1893, they  slightly modified, version.

These rifles were made under license by  Loewe, DWM, FN, and the Spanish factory at Oviedo. After receipt of these, the Brazilian government asked for some slight modifications. This tweaked version of the design was the 1894 or M1894, served in the War of Canudos in 1897 and the Contestado War. It was only made by Fabrique Nationale and Loewe.

The rifle rifle has the Brazilian catruche mostly in-tact over the chamber, with the maker marking and model on the left side:

ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRAZIL
MANUFACTURA LOEWE BERLIM 1894

"Berlim" is the correct spelling of Berlin in Portugese.
The cleaning rod is missing, and the bolt is mismatched. All other numbers seem to match.  The action is great, and the bore is frosty but has sharp, deep rifling, and no obvious pits or blemishes.
