ALL ANTIQUE RIFLES SOLD AS-IS. NEVER ATTEMPT TO FIRE AN ANTIQUE WEAPON WITHOUT CONSULTING A GUNSMITH. SEE PICTURES FOR CONDITION AND DETAILS

The 1842 Springfield was the last smoothbore rifle to see military service in America and was among the first percussion rifles to see military use in America.  It was also the first American military rifle made with interchangeable parts. These rifles were produced from 1844 to 1855. The barrels were made exceptionally thick so that they could be rifled later if necessary.

These were used by both the Union and the Confederacy in the Civil War as they were issued to militia units prior to secession.

The rifle available for sale was built in 1854 at the Springfield armory. It is beautiful and appears to have been generally well-taken care of.

It was found here in Alabama, but its individual history is not known.

Markings are crisp including a rack nuber of 21 stamped into the stock. All wood and metal parts are solid, though there is a crack between the trigger guard and the side plate. The action is tight and functions perfectly. Everything appears solid and functional. All hardware is original.

The barrel was shortened at some point in the distant past with the cut just behind where the bayonet lug would have been. This is a common modification found in both the Confederacy and in rifles which were surplused by the government after the war as bayonets may not have been available or useful, while a slightly shorter gun was. There is no cleaning/loading rod.

 Features:

  • .69 Caliber
  • Originally a 42" smoothbore Barrel shortened to approx. 39 3/8"
  • Percussion
  • Single Trigger
  • Overall Length: Approx. 55"
  • White Finished Barrel which has browned with age
  • Fixed Front Sight
  • Smooth bore with fine pitting common to black powder rifles of this period.
